The key aspects of a prebiotic are based on the idea that \u201cthe host cannot digest them and they benefit health by positively influencing beneficial native microbes.\u201d<\/p><p data-start=\"5596\" data-end=\"5801\">The use of prebiotics or probiotics aims to influence the intestinal environment dominated by trillions of commensal microbes, in order to benefit human health. (World Gastroenterology Organization, 2017).<\/p><h2 data-section-id=\"remdpk\" data-start=\"5803\" data-end=\"5826\">What are prebiotics?<\/h2><p data-start=\"5828\" data-end=\"6032\">\u201cPrebiotics are food ingredients that have the potential to benefit the host by selectively stimulating the growth of certain microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract\u201d (FAO\/WHO, Pi\u00f1eiro et al., 2008).<\/p><p data-start=\"6034\" data-end=\"6262\">Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that selectively support the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Research suggests they may improve digestive health, heart health, weight management, and nutrient absorption.<\/p><p data-start=\"6264\" data-end=\"6457\">The term prebiotic refers to foods containing ingredients that the body cannot digest but that improve health by promoting beneficial intestinal bacteria growth, such as fructooligosaccharides.<\/p><h2 data-section-id=\"1ef3sqb\"
