Hoy la media de vida est\u00e1 en los 72 a\u00f1os y su actividad laboral se ha extendido cerca de esa edad. Sin embargo, la aparici\u00f3n de enfermedades cr\u00f3nicas, principalmente las cardiovasculares y la diabetes, producto de los h\u00e1bitos de vida adquiridos desde los baby boomers, sigue afectando a las personas de mediana edad.<\/p><p data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"1188\">En la infancia, el sedentarismo, la malnutrici\u00f3n (obesidad o desnutrici\u00f3n), las pantallas, son algunos de los principales problemas de salud p\u00fablica y afectan el desarrollo normal y futuro desde la infancia.<\/p><p data-start=\"1190\" data-end=\"1522\">La aparici\u00f3n hace d\u00e9cadas de los suplementos alimenticios ha buscado subsanar de alguna manera las deficiencias nutricionales, tanto en la infancia como en la edad adulta. Una explosi\u00f3n de informaci\u00f3n, de estudios, el r\u00e1pido desarrollo y las diferentes opciones que bombardean al usuario, le hacen muy dif\u00edcil la toma de decisiones.<\/p><hr data-start=\"1524\" data-end=\"1527\" \/><h3 data-section-id=\"1byvmkh\" data-start=\"1529\" data-end=\"1580\">Conceptos de alimento funcional y nutrac\u00e9uticos<\/h3><h4 data-start=\"1582\" data-end=\"1605\">Alimento funcional<\/h4><p data-start=\"1607\" data-end=\"1838\">Guleben &#8211; alimentos funcionalesSe ha descrito como \u201caquel producto, alimento modificado o ingrediente alimentario, que pueda proveer beneficios a la salud, superiores a los ofrecidos por los alimentos tradicionales\u201d (Ashwell,2001).<\/p><p data-start=\"1840\" data-end=\"2189\">El concepto nace desde la concepci\u00f3n de alimento sano, que se considera \u201cun alimento libre de riesgo para la salud y que tiene la capacidad de consumir y conservar todos su potencial nutricional, su atractivo a los sentidos, su pureza y su frescura\u201d, concepto inicial, que m\u00e1s adelante se transformar\u00eda en el de alimento funcional que hoy conocemos.<\/p><p data-start=\"2191\" data-end=\"2402\">Los alimentos funcionales son los que tienen un efecto potencialmente positivo en la salud m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la nutrici\u00f3n b\u00e1sica. \u00c9stas promueven la salud \u00f3ptima y ayudan a disminuir el riesgo de padecer enfermedades.<\/p><p data-start=\"2404\" data-end=\"2707\">Por ejemplo, en Estados Unidos la FDA, encargada y responsable de la administraci\u00f3n de alimentos y medicamentos, regula las afirmaciones de los fabricantes sobre los nutrientes de los alimentos funcionales y los efectos que causan las enfermedades, la salud o el funcionamiento del cuerpo (Mayo Clinic).<\/p><p data-start=\"2709\" data-end=\"2743\">Ejemplos de alimentos funcionales:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2744\" data-end=\"2893\"><li data-section-id=\"12wd2hd\" data-start=\"2744\" data-end=\"2767\">Leches enriquecidas<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1oz4sxw\" data-start=\"2768\" data-end=\"2807\">Leches de iniciaci\u00f3n y continuaci\u00f3n<\/li><li data-section-id=\"gffrt7\" data-start=\"2808\" data-end=\"2832\">Yogures enriquecidos<\/li><li data-section-id=\"16sacsx\" data-start=\"2833\" data-end=\"2858\">Cereales fortificados<\/li><li data-section-id=\"9w617r\" data-start=\"2859\" data-end=\"2878\">Pan enriquecido<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1otvnpc\" data-start=\"2879\" data-end=\"2893\">Sal yodada<\/li><\/ul><hr data-start=\"2895\" data-end=\"2898\" \/><h4 data-start=\"2900\" data-end=\"2919\">Nutraceuticals<\/h4><p data-start=\"2921\" data-end=\"3201\">guleben &#8211;
